What is Cosplay && Why is it Necessary?

Obviously you have heard about it before if you are on this site. Maybe you stumbled across this site, and was intrigued by the interesting colors and accessories we monsters wear. If you happen to not know what cosplay is, it is a shortened version of ‘costume play’ a term that originated in the 1980’s created by Nobuyuki Takahashi, when he noticed Americans wore costumes to science fiction conventions.

People quickly began making and designing costumes based off popular anime series, and get together at conventions or group outings to show off their fandom and love for costuming. Every and all characters from anime, popular movie series, and videogames are cosplayed as, and many cosplayers add their own flare and artistic vision to their costumes.

Designing a costume is not always easy, and because there are usually extreme and fantastical garments and accessories in Anime, most pieces have to be made from scratch or commissioned by professional designers to create! Many cosplayers go to extensive lengths to get exactly the outfit they want, which introduces the DIY world of costume. While many sites make replicas of accessories and garments worn in Anime, some cosplayers prefer to have a selfmade outfit as it is personalized and sometimes much more detailed than something that can be mass-produced.

While cosplay has roots of costume and is a form of costume, there are some key differences between the two. Cosplay tends to be replications of current anime characters and pre-existing characters, while costume covers a broader spectrum of all forms of theatrical dress and clothing that isn’t every-day clothing. Cosplay has stricter guidelines on what the costume has to be, since it is imitating a character, and straying farther from the design can make it harder to distinguish what the cosplay is meant to be.

Cosplay is now extremely widespread across the world, and there are many different types of anime conventions around the world where avid anime-enthusiastics are able to dress up and express their fandom!

Overall, both cosplay and costume should be looked at with a air of playfulness and creativity. Ones costume can be simple or intricate as one wishes, and only limited by the imagination and willpower of the cosplayee. Plastik Monstars LOVES to see other cosplay and costume lovers express their love for cosplay!!

An Interview with a fellow MonSTAR

Plastik Monstarrs are ALWAYS happy to meet fellow monsters and cosplayers who understand the importance of bringing some crazy color and fashion into the mix! Today we have a interview with monster lover cosplayer who goes by the name of Mikki! We will be asking her some questions on her preferences and inspirations for her crazy and unique form of costume!

1. When was the first time you experienced or participated in cosplay/costume?

Mikki: The first time I ever experienced and participated cosplay was around 4th and 5th grade. I went to my first anime convention, and I thought there were a bunch of weird people running around. But I also thought it was really cool. The next con I went to, which was in the same year, was fanime. Back when fanime was a little empty. (I think it was fanime…) But I dressed up as Trunks from Dragon Ball Z.

2. What made you want to do costumes and dress up?
Mikki: I simply love the attention, and I love connecting with people who have close to the same interests as me.

3. What does cosplay mean to you?
Mikki: Cosplay doesn’t mean a lot to me. I don’t cosplay as anime characters a whole lot. (officially? Maybe 2 or 3 times). But to me, cosplay is about having fun.

4. What steps do you take in the cosplay creation/experience to get the costume you want?

Mikki: I plan things out, like most people. I save up a bunch of money that just happens to come out of nowhere, and I buy some fabric, and my friend usually helps me sew it up, if it has anything to do with sewing. But the FIRST FIRST step is usually a wig. Which I buy on ebay. Harr Harr.

5. What is your favorite cosplay and anime?
Mikki: I currently don’t have a favorite cosplay. But my favorite Anime(s) are DragonBall Z, Gurren Lagann, and im currently watching Ergo Proxy.

6. Do you participate in the cosplay community?
Mikki: I guess? I believe that going to conventions in cosplay would be participating in the cosplay community, yes? But I much rather do fashion than cosplay.

7. What is your favorite convention that you have attended?
Mikki: Fanime, which is in San Jose, and Sac-Anime, which is in Sacramento.

8. Any other thoughts on costume/cosplay?
Mikki: Some people take cosplay seriously, and some people just throw on a random colored wig and name themselves NARUTO! But. Overall. Cosplay should be something that brings people together. Especially in the Anime community.

A Small Introduction of Sorts

Since this is the first post, we will be doing some small introductions.

Plastik Monstars is made up of 2 main characters, Digi Monstarr and MeowMix Monstarr. While our characters tend to be surrounded by much mystery and illusion, we are known by most as David and Ariel. Knowing eachother from very early times, we knew we had very similar interests, and both had a intense love of costume and all forms of cosplay. You could say the rest is history…..

Starting from a early age as ‘the kids who over did it for Halloween’ and were frequently the overdressed ones at certain occasions and events. While we were glad people enjoyed the bizarre-ness of our creativity and costume sense, we were unhappy with being the odd ones out. Stumbling upon the rave scene almost by accident, we found a place where “un-natural” didn’t mean anything, and colorful and crazy was NECESSARY. Raving was our output and way of channeling our love of color and the fantastical, and furthered our inspiration in our wardrobe and costumes.

Inspired by rave rainbow colors, and Japanese-esque cyber styles, our style became more outlandish and reminiscent of childhood monsters and creatures that only exist in the imagination. From the depths of our minds, ‘creature characters’ began to develop, and the decision to go FULL OUT in everything we do was the first step to realizing the TRUE MONSTER inside us.

Fueled by love of theatricals and the synthetic, and having skills with designing clothing and hair pieces, we set out to be the BIGGEST and BEST thing to ever hit the dancefloor! As with all creative monsters, many things that we think up in our mind isn’t readily available for purchase or wear, so it has to be created ourselves! We are firm supporters of DIY and being crafty when it comes to making and designing costume wear and club wear alike!

This website will have articles and more about making and designing various pieces of costume and cosplay!
